Drainpipe collapses at McDonald Commons after heavy rain

A drain pipe at McDonald Commons in Madeira failed, causing a 20-foot-by-40-foot sinkhole near baseball field B.

A large sinkhole has formed in a Madeira park after Greater Cincinnati received more than 3 inches of rain in 24 hours. 

The large sinkhole formed in McDonald Commons after a drain pipe failed, according to  City Council member Brian Mueller. 

"Heavy rain overnight caused flooding throughout town including the central business district. Unfortunately, a drain pipe at McDonald Commons failed, causing a 20' x 40' sinkhole near baseball field B," Mueller said on Facebook.

Mueller said the city expects the hole to worsen with additional water flow that is occurring. More rain is also in the forecast.

"How this affects Saturday's fireworks event at McDonald Commons has not yet been determined," Mueller said. 

Madeira is supposed to host its Independence Day celebration at McDonald Commons on Saturday. Mueller said the event will likely continue as planned.

"At this time it is unlikely the hole can be repaired before Saturday. The City is evaluating the safety of blocking off the area from attendees," Mueller told The Enquirer. "We already block off the dirt baseball fields to prevent dust being kicked up by walking/running."
