A teenager died at the hospital after an apparent medical incident at a Princeton High School sports field Thursday night, officials said.
Ethan Jovani Trejo, a 16-year-old soccer player, collapsed on the field during conditioning, Princeton City Schools superintendent Tom Burton said in a Friday statement. The athletic trainer administered lifesaving procedures, including CPR, immediately until an ambulance arrived.
A 911 caller reported the teen was down and collapsed, had a seizure and stopped breathing after a scrimmage around 8:20 p.m.
The caller said they were using an automated external defibrillator, a device that monitors vital signs and is capable of delivering shocks to restart a heart that has stopped beating.
"You guys need to hurry up," he told the dispatcher.
A Sharonville medical unit and police responded. Ethan was taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center in Liberty Township, and school officials said he died about an hour later.
"Our Princeton family, friends, classmates, teammates, coaches, and community grieve the loss of a life taken too soon," Burton wrote. "We are in contact with the student’s family and ask on their behalf that our community provide them with the support, respect, and privacy to process this sudden and unexpected loss of a loved and truly remarkable young person."
The Butler County Coroner's Office confirmed Ethan's death is being investigated. Officials in that office said more information could be released after further discussions with the teen's family.
The school encouraged any student, staff member or community member who would like to seek counseling to connect with a licensed and trained professional at Princeton City Schools. The district has partnered with Fernside and Talbert House to support the community during this time.
"Once again, our sympathies and prayers are with the family and all those affected by recent events," Roddy's statement reads. "Many of our families have faced significant personal challenges this year, let us all continue to care for and support one other."
The cause of death is pending investigation, according to the Butler County Coroner's report.
