FAIRFIELD – To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks the Fairfield Community Foundation is planning to honor its own hometown heroes.
Beginning July 1 the foundation will begin accepting nominations for three Greater Fairfield Hometown Heroes awards, one honoring each a firefighter, police officer and medical provider serving Fairfield or Fairfield Township.
“As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of 9/11 ,where we witnessed the sacrifice of so many first responders and the efforts of our medical community to deal with thousands of injuries, we felt it was a great time to remember our greater Fairfield hometown heroes,’’ said Justin Krueger, chief executive officer of Mercy Health.
“Help us honor the dedication and sacrifice of these dedicated professionals in our community.”
Nominations can be made on the foundation's website through Aug. 1.
“It’s the 20th anniversary of 9/11, which is a somber time. People recognize the importance of fire and police and medical workers during that time,’’ said Linda Yarger, president of the foundation.
“These are the people that run towards (danger) and not away.”
Qualifying nominations in each category will be posted on the foundation’s website Aug. 15. The public can vote for one nominee in all three categories. Voting closes at the end of the August.
The winner will be announced Sept. 11, Yarger said. The winners will receive a cash donation and a glass statuette personalized with a plaque created by artists at the InsideOut Studio.
“The pandemic really shook everybody’s world and it seemed an appropriate time to honor them,” Yarger said.
“We need to thank the people who have gone above and beyond during all this crazy stuff.”
