The father of John Keller announced via Twitter on Friday that the Central Michigan quarterback who started his college career with the Cincinnati Bearcats was going home from the hospital about one month after being shot at an off-campus party at CMU.

The Isabella County Sheriff's Office announced in April that authorities took a suspect into custody following the shooting of Keller as well as another CMU student. Kenneth Thomas was arraigned in Isabella County Trial Court. He pleaded not guilty to 10 charges.
A GoFundMe was established to assist with Keller and his family with medical expenses.
Central Michigan president Dr. Bob Davies confirmed that Keller was in serious condition after being shot at an off-campus apartment complex.

Keller didn't play in a game as a freshman for the Cincinnati Bearcats in 2018 as a walk-on from North Canton Hoover High School. After UC, he attended Pearl River Community College before committing to CMU in 2020. He sat out last season.

In the early hours of Saturday morning, we learned that two individuals were shot at a local off-campus apartment complex. We now can confirm that the two victims are Central Michigan University students — junior Johnathan Keller and senior Tyler Bunting. Both were taken immediately to regional hospitals for care; one remains in serious condition and the other in stable condition.
I and many other CMU staff have personally reached out to each of the students and their families to offer support. We are keeping them in our thoughts and prayers. Please join me in hoping for a speedy recovery for both individuals.
Local law enforcement, led by the Isabella County Sherriff, continues to investigate the incident and is searching for the suspect or suspects involved. I am grateful for the collaboration and care of our region’s public safety agencies. We are fortunate to live in an area supported by multiple law enforcement offices; their efforts ensure our community remains a safe place to live, learn and work.
