Detroit Tigers pitcher Spencer Turnbull threw the fifth no-hitter of the season, blanking the Seattle Mariners in a 5-0 win on Tuesday night.
Turnbull's gem is the first Tigers no-hitter since May 7, 2011, when Justin Verlander blanked the Toronto Blue Jays. It is the eighth no-hitter in Tigers history.
Turnbull threw 117 pitches, 77 for strikes. He struck out nine batters while walking two. In all, three runners reached base against Turnbull. Jarred Kelenic walked to lead off the fourth inning. José Marmolejos walked to lead off the ninth and then Kelenic reached on a fielder's choice later in the inning before Turnbull struck out Mitch Haniger to complete the no-hitter.
Earlier in the game, Haniger came the closest to getting a hit for the Mariners. Haniger hit a deep flyball to the wall in center field in the fourth inning, and was robbed of a hit by a diving stop from third baseman Jeimer Candelario leading off the seventh. The ball was recorded at 108 mph off Haniger’s bat, but Candelario snagged the one-hopper and made a strong throw to first base for the out.
Entering Tuesday night's game, Turnbull had never pitched more than seven innings in 49 career starts.
Turnbull's gem comes just 10 days after the Cincinnati Reds' Wade Miley no-hit Cleveland and 12 days after the Baltimore Orioles' John Means no-hit the Mariners, who become the second team this season to get no-hit twice, joining Cleveland.
The last time two teams were no-hit twice in the same season was 2015 (Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets).
The Chicago White Sox's Carlos Rodon (vs. Cleveland on April 14) and the San Diego Padres' Joe Musgrove (vs. the Texas Rangers on April 9) have the season's other no-hitters.
