Free-agent pitcher Homer Bailey, a first-round draft pick of the Reds in 2004 who pitched for Cincinnati from 2007 to 2018, is expected to play for USA Baseball at the upcoming Summer Olympics baseball qualifier, according to a report Wednesday night via Twitter from MLB Network's Jon Morosi.
The WBSC Americas Baseball Qualifier is scheduled to begin May 31 in Florida.
Bailey, who turned 35 earlier this month, last pitched in Major League Baseball for the Minnesota Twins last season. He posted a 3.38 ERA in eight innings over two starts. He was released by the Twins last September.
Bailey, who has never pitched against the Reds, signed as a free agent with the Twins in Dec. 2019.
Bailey pitched for the Reds for the first 12 seasons of his big-league career, going 67-77 with a 4.56 ERA and 1.377 WHIP in 212 starts. He threw no-hitters for the Reds in Sept. 2012 against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park and in July 2013 against the San Francisco Giants at Great American Ball Park.
The Reds traded Bailey with Jeter Downs and Josiah Gray to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Kyle Farmer, Matt Kemp, Yasiel Puig, Alex Wood and cash, but Bailey was released by the Dodgers a short time later.
In 31 starts between the Kansas City Royals and the Oakland A's in 2019, Bailey was 13-9 with a 4.57 ERA.
