Netting causing causing overnight closures on Western Hills Viaduct

The Western Hills Viaduct, pictured, Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2021, in Cincinnati. The Western Hills Viaduct connects Interstate 75 and major roads on CincinnatiÕs west side and in Hamilton County to the downtown and uptown areas of the city. It is a major transportation link that carries more than 55,000 vehicles a day over the Mill Creek Valley and a large, active railroad yard, according to the City of Cincinnati.

The bottom deck of the Western Hills Viaduct will be closed to through traffic overnight this weekend.

The bottom deck will be closed between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. on Friday, May 7 through Sunday, May 9.

The overnight closure will prohibit access to the lower deck from the Harrison Ave. exit on the west end and the Spring Grove exit on the east end. Crews will be installing nets above the viaduct's intersection at Spring Grove.

City officials say the nets are being added as a safety precaution.

"Maintenance crews regularly remove loose concrete by chipping it off the upper deck to prevent it from falling to the lower deck. The nets will catch loose concrete that might fall to the lower deck in between regular chipping and inspections," a press release said.
