The mother of the 2-year-old boy who died after consuming fentanyl told Ludlow police she used her federal stimulus check money to buy the drug, said Kenton County Commonwealth's Attorney Rob Sanders.
Sanders said the murder charge against Lauren Ashley Baker was warranted because even though two-year-old boys are quite active, it's not hard to put something away where a child that small can't get to it.
"It’s tragic and senseless that a 2-year-old boy is dead because his mother couldn’t keep the fentanyl out of his reach," Sanders said.
The 33-year-old Baker said she traveled Saturday, March 13 to the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood of Cincinnati, according to a Ludlow Police Department report.
Baker told police that she returned to Northern Kentucky and gave quantities of the drug to two other people in Ludlow.
She said she "took a shot" of fentanyl Thursday prior to taking a nap with her 2-year-old son Jaxson. He got into her purse and found the fentanyl, according to the report. Police were called to the 200 block of Stokesay Street at about 3:35 p.m.
The contents of her purse were scattered on the floor when she woke up, and Jaxson was on the floor not breathing, according to the report.
Officers saw a substance consistent with fentanyl on the bed. Police said she handed the officers more of the drug.
Baker was arrested and charged with murder, importing fentanyl and trafficking in a controlled substance.
