Former Cincinnati Reds manager Davey Johnson is home and resting comfortably after being treated at a Florida hospital for COVID-19, according to a report via Twitter from Jay Horwitz, who spent 39 years in media relations for the New York Mets before shifting to a role in alumni relations in 2018.
The New York Post's Ken Davidoff tweeted earlier about Johnson's condition and reaction to the death of National Baseball Hall of Famer Hank Aaron, Johnson's former Atlanta Braves teammate:
Johnson, 77, managed the Reds from 1993 to 1995, leading the team to a first-place finish in the National League Central in the strike-shortened 1994 season (66-48) and in 1995 (85-59). The 1995 team was the last Reds team to win a playoff series, sweeping the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Johnson also managed the Mets (1984-90), the Baltimore Orioles (1996-97), the Dodgers (1999-2000) and the Washington Nationals (2011-13).
In 2018, Johnson was among 10 names on the Today's Game Era ballot reviewed and voted on at the Baseball Winter Meetings. The Today’s Game Era is one of four Eras Committees providing an avenue for Hall of Fame consideration to managers, umpires and executives, as well as players retired for more than 15 seasons.
