So far, 2021 in Greater Cincinnati has been warmer than usual but it won't stay that way for long.
The polar vortex, which is typically settled over the North Pole, is about to split, according to USA TODAY. A piece of it could be paying a visit to the central and eastern U.S. within the next week or two, forecasters said.
This will help cause temperatures to plummet and potentially set the stage for some snowstorms, AccuWeather said. After an initial chill later this week and over this coming weekend, even more cold air is set to invade after that.
"I do expect that eventually winter weather will become more active across the U.S. post-MLK Day" on Jan. 18, meteorologist Judah Cohen of Atmospheric and Environmental Research told USA TODAY
In Greater Cincinnati, temperatures will be cool on Tuesday but will warm up again to above normal on Wednesday and Thursday. On Thursday night, the cold front associated with the polar vortex arrives, bringing a chance of rain for Friday.
As temperatures drop, National Weather Service said light snow showers are possible Friday through the overnight and into the day on Saturday. Highs this weekend are expected in the mid-30s.
The National Weather Service said there isn't a significant source of arctic air, according to the current forecast.
"Thus, temperatures are lower throughout the weekend, however, the decrease is only
closer to the current seasonal normals. Highs will be in the low to mid 30s with lows in the low 20s," the National Weather Service said.
But that cold air will stick around though next week.
"No significant temperature changes expected Monday with only a slight warming trend into early next week," the National Weather Service said.
