A third grade student at Mason Elementary School died unexpectedly Saturday morning, the school district announced.
JJ Day "was a great friend who loved the color blue, soccer, and adored his older sisters," Mason City Schools wrote on Facebook Saturday evening.
The district will have additional counselors and clinical therapists from Cincinnati Children's Hospital at Mason Elementary, Mason Intermediate and Mason Middle School on Monday, officials said.
The district is inviting the community to wear blue on Monday to show love and support for JJ and his family.
"Our hearts are with the Day family during this very difficult time," Mason City Schools wrote. "We also lift up all of JJ’s classmates, teachers and support staff. Please continue to keep JJ's family, friends, neighbors and all who loved him in your hearts & prayers."
The cause of death has not been specified by authorities. The Enquirer has reached out to the City of Mason Police Department and coroner's office and is working to get more information.
