Former Middletown High School standout Kyle Schwarber agreed to a one-year contract with the Washington Nationals, the team announced Saturday night.
Schwarber's deal is worth $10 million, according to multiple reports.
Schwarber's reaction, from MLB.com's Jessica Camerato:
"I told Rizz [Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo] when we talked on the phone, I said, 'I'm not approaching this as a one-year deal,'" Schwarber said on his introductory Zoom call. "'I'm going to come in, I’m going to give you everything I have, and I'm going to play as if I've been here five years and still got a couple more years left. I'm going to give you everything I've got. I'm going to invest myself into winning, and that's what I want to do here.'"
Schwarber was non-tendered last month by the Chicago Cubs, making the outfielder and designated hitter a free agent.
In his sixth Major League Baseball season - all with the Cubs - Schwarber, 27, hit .188 with 11 home runs and 24 RBIs with 66 strikeouts in 224 plate appearances in 2020.
He has hit 11 of his 121 career homers at Great American Ball Park - his most at any park other than Wrigley Field. He has homered 21 times against the Reds - his most against any opponent.
After Schwarber offered Reds relief pitcher Amir Garrett a few choice words as Garrett celebrated a strikeout in Sept. 2019, Garrett said last June that he's not afraid of Schwarber.
