LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE MOMENTS LEADING UP TO A SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP POLICE OFFICER CRASHING INTO ANOTHER DRIVER. WE HAVE THOSE DETAILS JUST AHEAD. AND A MAN IS INJURED AFTER A SHOOTING NEAR DOWNTOWN CINCINNATI THIS MORNING. WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE INVESTIGATION SO FAR AND I’M TRACKING RAIN ON RADAR RIGHT NOW AND IT’S ONLY GOING TO GET MORE WIDESPREAD THIS AFTERNOON. WHO’S SEEING THE RAIN NOW AND WHO FEELS LIKE THE 30 NEXT? COMING UP. THIS IS NEWS 5 LEADING THE WAY WITH BREAKING NEWS AND NOW BREAKING NEWS. A POLICE INVESTIGATION IS UNDERWAY RIGHT NOW IN MOUNT AUBURN. THANKS FOR JOINING US HERE AT NOON. I’M STEVEN ALBRITTON. AND I’M LACEY ROBERTS, WPTV NEWS FIVE’S TODD -- WAS AT DANIEL DINDA EXCUSE ME, HE’S AT THE SCENE WITH WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR. DANIELLE LACY, STEVEN I JUST GOT AN UPDATE FROM OFFICERS HERE ON SCENE WHO SAY THIS IS A HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION. I’M GOING TO STEP OUT OF THE WAY SO YOU GET AN IDEA OF WHAT WE’RE LOOKING AT. AS YOU CAN SEE, THE CRIME SCENE TAPE IS UP AND OFFICERS HERE ON SCENE TELL US THAT A VICTIM WAS FOUND IN THIS TACO BELL PARKING LOT. THIS IS ON THE CORNER OF HIGHLAND AVENUE AND EAST MCMILLAN. WE WERE TOLD THAT EIGHT SHOTS WERE FIRED AND THAT THE VICTIM WAS TAKEN TO U.S. ECMC, WHERE THEY LATER DIED. AT THIS TIME, THERE IS NO SUSPECT. BUT ONCE AGAIN, ONE PERSON IS DEAD AFTER A SHOOTING HERE IN MOUNT AUBURN. WE’RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO GATHER MORE INFORMATION AS SOON AS WE GET IT. OFFICERS ARE STILL HERE ON SCENE. SO LIKE I MENTIONED, ONCE WE GET THOSE NEW INFORMATION, BE SURE TO PASS IT ON. BUT WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR IS THAT THIS IS A HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION. ONE MAN WAS WAS FOUND DEAD IN THE PARKING LOT BEHIND ME AT TACO BELL. HE WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL WHERE HE LATER DIED. AND WE’LL CONTINUE TO GET YOU MORE INFORMATION AS SOON AS WE GET IT. REPORTING LIVE, DANIELLE WHITE, NEWS FIVE. DANIELLE, THANKS SO MUCH. AND OF COURSE, THAT’S THE SECOND SHOOTING HERE IN CINCINNATI JUST A DAY. WE’LL HAVE MORE ON THE EARLIER SHOOTING COMING UP IN JUST A MOMENT. BUT WE HAVE SOME BREAKING DETAILS ABOUT A CRASH IN WHICH A SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP POLICE OFFICER HIT ANOTHER DRIVER, KILLING THAT DRIVER AND HIMSELF. NOW, THIS HAPPENED ON HAMILTON AVENUE BACK ON MARCH 31ST. AND WLKY NEWS FIVE, TODD -- JOINS US IN THE STUDIO WITH WHAT WE’RE LEARNING WITH THAT NEW INFORMATION. YEAH, A LOT OF NEW INFORMATION HERE. LACEY AND STEVEN, THE KEY TAKEAWAY AT THIS POINT IS THAT INVESTIGATORS SAY SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP POLICE OFFICER TIM UNWIN WAS GOING 84 AND A 25 MILE PER HOUR ZONE WHEN HE LOST CONTROL. EVENTUALLY CRASHING INTO AND KILLING 50 YEAR OLD WILLIAM DUNSON. AN OFFICER UNKNOWN ALSO DIED IN THAT CRASH. IT HAPPENED ON HAMILTON AVENUE NEAR THE RONALD REAGAN INTERCHANGE AT 1205 IN THE MORNING ON THE LAST DAY OF MARCH, INVESTIGATORS RELEASED MORE INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT TOOK PLACE IN A REPORT POSTED ON A WEBSITE OPERATED BY THE OHIO STATE HIGHWAY PATROL. AS WE’VE REPORTED IN THE PAST, OFFICER, ANYONE WAS RESPONDING TO AN EMERGENCY CALL FOR SERVICE AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT. THE REPORT SAYS HIS POLICE VEHICLES WARNING LIGHTS WERE ON, AS WAS THE CRUISER’S SIREN, AND THAT WHILE THERE WAS A LOT OF RAIN IN THE AREA THE FOLLOWING MORNING, THE REPORT SAYS AT THE TIME OF THE CRASH, IT WAS DRY ALONG HAMILTON AVENUE. BUT AGAIN, THE MAIN POINT HERE, 84 TO 25 RACING TO GET THAT OTHER SCENE. SO THAT BEGS THE QUESTION AND WE’RE TRYING TO FIND OUT THE ANSWER, WHO MADE THAT EMERGENCY CALL FOR HELP? THAT OFFICER WAS RESPONDING TO AND WHERE DID THAT CALL ORIGINATE? WHAT WAS THE OUTCOME? STILL MORE QUESTIONS THAN ANSWERS AT THIS POINT, BUT I’LL KEEP WORKING TO FIND OUT AS MUCH INFORMATION ABOUT THE DEADLY CRASH AS POSSIBLE TODAY, WTTW NEWS FIVE. TODD, THANK YOU SO MUCH. WE DO APPRECIATE IT. ALL RIGHT. I PROMISE YOU, THE CALENDAR SAYS IT’S MAY. YEAH, IT IS MAY, BUT IT DOES NOT FEEL LIKE IT OUTSIDE OF ONE BIT. NOT AT ALL. AND CHARGES FOR SHOWERS AND THOSE GUSTY WINDS ARE DEFINITELY GOING TO STICK AROUND. AND THROUGHOUT THE DAY. METEOROLOGIST ALLISON ROGERS JOINS US WITH CINCINNATI’S MOST ACCURATE FORECAST. ALLISON, WE’RE JUST GOING TO HAVE TO DEAL WITH IT, RIGHT? YEAH, THAT’S EXACTLY IT. SO WHILE THE CALENDAR DOES SAY MAY MOTHER NATURE DOES NOT GO BY A CALENDAR AND TODAY IT FEELS MORE LIKE THE 30S. AND WE’VE GOT SOME COLD SHOWERS COMING DOWN FOR MANY OF US NORTH OF THE OHIO RIVER RIGHT NOW. SO IF YOU LIVE WITHIN THE CINCINNATI METRO, IT’S MAINLY DRY, BUT THERE IS A LITTLE BIT OF DRIZZLE FOR AREAS THROUGHOUT NORTHERN KENTUCKY. SO FAR TODAY, WE’VE HAD A LITTLE BIT OF LIGHT RAINFALL THAT’S NOW STARTING TO MAKE ITS WAY A LITTLE BIT CLOSER TO 471 HERE. AREAS AROUND WILDER, HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, COVINGTON, NEWPORT GOING TO START TO SEE SOME OF THAT RAIN ROLLING THROUGH FAIRLY SOON. WE ALSO HAVE ANOTHER LITTLE LINE OF SHOWERS APPROACHING THE 275 LOOP ON THE WEST SIDE AREAS TO THE NORTH AS WELL, SEEING SOME LIGHT RAINFALL FOR PARTS OF WARREN COUNTY, OTHER PARTS OF BUTLER COUNTY AROUND HAMILTON, NEW MIAMI, MILLVILLE SEEING SOME OF THAT LIGHT RAINFALL, TOO. AND THERE IS STILL MORE RAIN ON THE WAY FOR THIS AFTERNOON. IN FACT, IT’S ONLY GOING TO GET MORE WIDESPREAD. WE’VE GOT A LIGHT SHOWER ALSO MOVING OVER TOP OF NEW MARKET RIGHT NOW IN HIGHLAND COUNTY, AREAS IN BROWN COUNTY, THE NORTHERN HALF OF BROWN COUNTY. ALSO SEEING SOME OF THAT LIGHT RAINFALL RIGHT NOW AS WELL. SO IT’S ALL PART OF THE SYSTEM THAT’S STILL TRYING TO MOVE AWAY FROM US, BUT IT’S STILL GOING TO ALLOW FOR MORE SHOWERS TO DEVELOP AS WE GET INTO THE AFTERNOON, BECOMING MORE WIDESPREAD, NOT ANTICIPATING ANYTHING SEVERE. BUT AGAIN, YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT THE POTENTIAL FOR RAIN TO IMPACT YOUR AFTERNOON TODAY. IF YOUR KIDS HAVE OUTDOOR PRACTICES. THIS IS ONE OF THOSE DAYS WHERE IF YOU’RE WATCHING YOUR KIDS PLAY ANY SPORT OUTSIDE, YOU’LL WANT TO BE BUNDLED UP BECAUSE IT IS COLD OUT THERE. I’LL SHOW YOU THE NUMBERS WITH TEMPERATURES, PLUS HOW COLD IT’S GOING TO FEEL FOR THE REST OF THE AFTERNOON. COMING UP IN A LITTLE BIT, STEVEN AND LACEY ALLISON, THANK YOU. DEVELOPING ON WTAE, A MAN IS INJURED AFTER A SHOOTING NEAR DOWNTOWN CINCINNATI HAPPENING EARLY THIS MORNING. THIS HAPPENED ON SEVENTH STREET, THE SEVENTH STREET OVERPASS JUST BEFORE FOUR THIS MORNING. WLKY NEWS HAS BRIAN HAMRICK IS LIVE WITH WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR ABOUT THIS FIRST SHOOTING WE HAD EARLIER. BRIAN. YEAH. STEPHEN WELL, POLICE ARE STILL TRYING TO PIECE TOGETHER EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED HERE. THIS IS SEVENTH STREET. IT’S ONE WAY INTO DOWNTOWN FROM THE WEST SIDE OVER HERE. BUT THEY FOUND ONE MAN WHO HAD BEEN SHOT IN THE FACE HERE, STILL IN HIS VEHICLE, NOW SHOT SPOTTER WENT OFF ALERTING OFFICERS. SO THEY SENT CREWS THIS WAY. OFFICERS CAME BY. THEY SPOTTED A VEHICLE SITTING AT A VERY ODD ANGLE. SO THEY TURNED AROUND TO CHECK ON IT. POLICE SAY THEY FOUND ONE MAN INSIDE. HE WAS HIT BELOW THE EYE, BUT HE WAS RESPONDING. INVESTIGATORS SAY THERE WAS ONE SHOT THROUGH THE FRONT WINDSHIELD THAT THEY HAVE NOT SAID IF THEY THINK THE VEHICLE WAS STOPPED, IF IT WAS MOVING, IF THIS SHOOTING CAME FROM OUTSIDE OR IF IT WAS FROM INSIDE THE VEHICLE, IT’S IT’S A SHOTSPOTTER CALL CAME IN ON ACROSS THE OVERPASS ON SEVENTH STREET, DISTRICT FIVE HEARD THE RUN. ALSO RESPONDED. THEY WERE AT THIS PROCESSING SOME EVIDENCE. THEY RESPONDED. THEY WERE ON FIRST ON SCENE AND THEY OBVIOUSLY SEEN THE CAR WRECKED UP THERE. THEY WENT UP TO SEE WHAT OCCURRED AND THEY FOUND A MALE BLACK IN HIS MID 30S WITH A GUNSHOT WOUND TO THE FACE. YEAH. NOW, THEY HAVE NOT SAID WHETHER THEY THINK THIS IS RANDOM OR IF IT WAS TARGETED. MEANWHILE, THAT VICTIM, HE’S AT UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL, HE’S LISTED IN CRITICAL CONDITION. REPORTING LIVE, BRIAN HAMRICK
