CINCINNATI (WKRC) - The Cincinnati Health Department is warning about a harmful algae bloom in the Ohio River.
It has been detected along the riverfront, as well as both upstream and downstream. Officials began monitoring the bloom last weekend when it prompted the cancellation of the annual Ohio River Swim.
The warning was issued earlier Friday. The algae can cause skin and eye irritation, stomach cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, headache, fever, muscle weakness or difficulty breathing.
Officials say it doesn't pose a threat to drinking water, but you need to use caution with any recreational activities along the river.
