Former Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer hasn't always had the nicest things to say about the organization and his time in Cincinnati. But he's got nothing but praise for Joe Burrow.
"He got the Bengals here. He got this roster here," Palmer said of Burrow, per USA TODAY Sports' Jordan Mendoza. "I just think he has multiple Super Bowls in the future. ... A lot of that magic is Joe that's rubbing off on the guys ... and I think they might have just enough magic to get (a Super Bowl win)."
Palmer said he'll be rooting for Burrow and the Bengals on Sunday against the Rams. "No fanbase deserves this Super Bowl berth more," Palmer told Dan Patrick last month.
In 2019, the Bengals' starting quarterback for seven seasons was critical of his former team in remarks he made during a podcast interview with John Middlekauff during the "3 and Out" podcast. Palmer called the organization a "mess and disaster" and added that "when you have that added pressure and stress of not trusting the organization and knowing that they don't know what they're doing, that's just an added amount of stress you don't need as a young player."
"8-8 is like winning the Super Bowl for the organization in Cincinnati," Palmer said.
In Jan. 2020, Palmer said he'd caution Burrow about playing for the Bengals. "That's why I wanted out: I never felt like the (Bengals') organization was really trying to win a Super Bowl, and really chasing the Super Bowl," Palmer said.
Earlier that month, Palmer told Dan Patrick that Burrow "is such a spectacular talent" who "seems to be an obvious No. 1 pick."
"There's been some talent there. Whether the organization buys in and is fully going after a Super Bowl and really trying to win a Super Bowl is the other question," Palmer added. "They're drafting No. 1 for a reason - it's because they were the worst team in the National Football League. So obviously (Burrow) is not going into an environment like Patrick Mahomes went into in Kansas City. So we'll see."
"That's a tough job," Palmer said in 2019 when the Bengals were preparing to hire Zac Taylor as head coach. "There's no doubt about that. There's some jobs that are easier than others, that's for sure. That's one of the tougher ones in the league without having just the natural GM and the same scouting department, some of the things other teams throughout the league have. My only advice would be, 'Good luck.'"
The 39-year-old Palmer, the No. 1 pick in the 2003 NFL Draft who played for the Bengals from 2003 until he was traded to the Raiders in 2011, announced his retirement from football in Jan. 2018.
Palmer ranks 15th all-time with 46,247 passing yards. His 294 career passing touchdowns rank 14th.
