The quarterback that led St. Xavier High School to its most recent Ohio Division I championship in 2020, has announced his commitment to an Ivy League institution.
Brogan McCaughey, who threw for more than 5,300 yards in two seasons for Coach Steve Specht's Bombers will sign with Yale next Wednesday. He announced his decision via social media Friday morning.
"I was going through the recruiting process and getting stressed out with the COVID and the transfer portal," McCaughey said. "I got a text from the OC (offensive coordinator). I went on a visit in December and absolutely loved it."
Similar to St. Xavier, book smarts are needed at Yale in addition to football acumen.
The Bulldogs of New Haven, Connecticut were 5-5 last season, falling in the annual Harvard vs. Yale game 34-31 to end the season. Their 2020 season was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, but the 2019 team was 9-1 with a 50-43 double-overtime win over their archrival.

"I went up there and watched a little film and talked to the players," McCaughey said of Yale's offense. "I think my type of game and their type of coaching is very similar."
Yale is coached by Tony Reno. McCaughey's other reported offers were from Akron, Bowling Green, Eastern Kentucky, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Miami University, Ohio University, Penn, Toledo and Youngstown State.
Under St. Xavier offensive coordinator Andrew Coverdale, McCaughey flourished as a junior first-time starter in 2020. In 10 games (he missed two because of injury) he threw for 2,708 yards and 28 touchdowns. That included a school-record 556-yard game for five touchdowns in a win over Cleveland St. Ignatius.

In the state title game Nov. 13, 2020 against Pickerington Central, he had four touchdown passes in the first quarter to Jalen Patterson. By halftime, the Bombers led 44-3 and the game was all but over with a second-half running clock.
In 13 games his senior year he threw for 2,666 yards for 31 touchdowns and just five interceptions. In five of his games, he was removed by halftime with St. Xavier having commanding leads.
McCaughey benefited from several other top college players. On this year's Bombers team, Charles Kellom ran for a Greater Catholic League-South best 1,445 yards and 23 touchdowns with 35 receptions for six more scores. Kellom will sign with Akron with tight end Max Klare (39 catches, 637 yards, five TDs) going to Purdue. Offensive lineman Brian Parker II (Air Force) and Cam Collins (Duke) signed in fall along with linebacker Grant Lyons (Miami University).
In 2020, top target Liam Clifford signed with Penn State with defenders Matt Devine and Gio Albanese going to Air Force.

"It was unreal!" McCaughey said of his time with the football Bombers. "I'm very grateful for the team. The guys I got to group up with in this '22 class, we're all great friends. It was an awesome experience to be able to live it with each other."
McCaughey was First Team All-Ohio both seasons. He also has played on St. Xavier's hockey team the past two seasons. On the ice, they recently defeated Moeller in come-from-behind fashion, 4-3 in overtime at the Heritage Bank Center.
