Ken Bothof is retiring after serving nearly nine years as Northern Kentucky University's athletic director, according to university officials.
Bothof will remain with the university until June 30, NKU President Ashish Vaidya said in a release, adding that officials are preparing to launch a national search for his replacement.
Joining NKU in August 2013, Bothof oversaw the university's athletic department as it transitioned to Division I status, according to Vaidya.
"Among the most important successes during Ken’s time at NKU is the overhaul of the academics operation in athletics, which has led to 14 straight semesters with a cumulative, department-wide GPA of 3.20 or better," Vaidya said. "That also includes a current streak of eight consecutive semesters of a GPA better than 3.37."
Vaidya also noted that season ticket sales for men's basketball have almost tripled and fundraising has increased "five-fold" under Bothof's leadership.
But Bothof's tenure with NKU wasn't without controversy, as university officials were accused of following their own procedures regarding sexual assault following a "sexual incident" involving three men's basketball players and a female student in February 2015.
Vaidya applauded Bothof on his career and wished him well on the road ahead. "No doubt, he will leave big shoes to fill," Vaidya said.
