Cincinnati Bengals rookie receiver Ja'Marr Chase entered Sunday's Week 18 game against the Browns in Cleveland with 1,429 yards for the season - third most in Bengals' history - needing just 12 to break Chad Johnson's single-season franchise record of 1,440 set in 2007.
Chase got to play in one more game than Ochocinco did, but he broke Chad's record on a 24-yard catch and run from backup quarterback Brandon Allen in the first quarter that gave him 1,455 in his first National Football League season.
Social media reactions:
Last week, Chase's 266 yards were the most in a game by a rookie in NFL history. He had 11 catches - including three for touchdowns - in a 34-31 win in come-from-behind fashion against the Kansas City Chiefs at Paul Brown Stadium.
In the win against the Chiefs, Chase also broke Justin Jefferson's NFL rookie record of 1,400 receiving yards in a season set in 2020. Bill Groman had 1,473 in his rookie season for the 1960 Houston Oilers before the AFL-NFL merger.
And Chase became just the third Bengals player - joining Carl Pickens (17 in 1995) and Tyler Eifert (13 in 2015) - with 13 receiving touchdowns in a season.
Chase's teammate, starting quarterback Joe Burrow, set a new Bengals' record for single-season passing yardage last Sunday. He tied Andy Dalton's single-season record for passing touchdowns with his third TD pass of the game to Chase.
