Drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 2013 and traded six months later for Marlon Byrd, right-handed pitcher Ben Lively is returning to his former organization.
The Reds signed the 29-year-old Lively to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training. Lively hasn’t pitched in the Majors since 2019, spending the last three years as a starting pitcher in Korea.

Lively was one of two non-roster additions to camp Thursday, along with minor league center fielder Lorenzo Cedrola.
Lively made 26 appearances (20 starts) in the Majors from 2017-19, mostly with the Philadelphia Phillies. He had a 4-7 record and a 4.26 ERA in 15 starts in 2017, striking out 52 and walking 24 in 88 2/3 innings.
Pitching for the Samsung Lions in Korea, Lively had a 10-12 record and a 4.14 ERA in 36 starts over three seasons, missing most of last year with a shoulder injury. He struck out 191 and walked 65 across 202 1/3 innings.

He was a part of the same Reds draft class that netted Tyler Mahle, Michael Lorenzen and Phillip Ervin, selected in the fourth round out of UCF.
Cedrola, 23, spent most of last season at Double-A Chattanooga. He hit .320 with 16 doubles, seven triples, nine homers and 61 RBI in 106 games. He was promoted to Triple-A Louisville for his final nine games of the season after the Reds called up TJ Friedl.
Listed at 5-foot-11, 170 pounds, Cedrola played in the Venezuelan Winter League during the last two offseasons. He was listed among Baseball America's top 30 prospects in the Boston Red Sox organization in 2017, but he hasn't been ranked since he was traded to the Reds in 2018.
