Tuesday marks a historic day for Cincinnati's leadership.Cincinnati's first Asian American mayor, along with maybe the most diverse city council, are being sworn in Tuesday morning.Mayor-elect Aftab Pureval and the city's nine council members will be sworn into office.And this ceremony won't look like past ones — for a number of different reasons.The event — typically held inside the music hall — is now moved to the northern lawn of Washington Park.It's a nod to COVID-19 safety protocols.Another difference: Pureval and the incoming council rode bikes from City Hall to the ceremony as a way to show support for transportation equity.Pureval, a Democrat, will be the first Asian American mayor of Cincinnati and the first new mayor in eight years.Jan Michele Lemon Kearney, who will serve as vice mayor, was the top vote-getter in the crowded race for council.Besides Kearney, seven other Democrats and one Republican rose to the top of the heap of 35 candidates. Several of them were elected to their first public office.Experts calling it the most diverse council ever with four women — three of them Black — and two Black men will add different perspectives to policymaking. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday.
