Northern Kentucky University is delaying the start of its spring semester due to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases.President Dr. Ashish Vaidya sent out a letter to students saying the regional transmission rate has risen to 1.3, which is as high as they've seen.Due to the surge, NKU will delay classes for one week. All classes will start on Tuesday, Jan. 18."With that change, our spring schedule matches most of the other Kentucky universities' start dates," Vaidya said.To make up for the lost week, final exams will happen after commencement.Summer sessions will need to be adjusted. The university will release a new comprehensive spring and summer academic calendar soon. The university is delaying move-in to residence hall students until Friday, Jan. 14. Anyone who needs to move in sooner will be accommodated.Campus will open Tuesday at 12 p.m., but officials are asking supervisors to consider work from home opportunities.Faculty are also encouraged to include fewer in-person activities in their classes. "We are asking for short-term adjustments perhaps replacing some in-person activities with hybrid options in order to temporarily de-densify campus," Vaidya said.The university is also considering changes to dining and other services. Any changes will be announced later this week.
