Sherry Hughes, a meteorologist for more than 10 years at WCPO, is leaving the station later this week.
Hughes announced on Twitter she will be taking some time to "truly enjoy the weather," and spending time with her husband, family and friends. Her last day will be Wednesday.
Her departure after more than 10 years was announced by the station Tuesday morning. According to the station, Hughes has been a member of WCPO's 9 First Warning Weather since 2011. She joined the Cincinnati station having spent time reporting on the weather in Tampa; Raleigh, North Carolina; Phoenix; and Charleston, South Carolina.
“We will all miss Sherry – her positive attitude, smile, laugh, dancing – you name it – she always makes you feel better," Jeff Brogan, vice president and general manager of WCPO, said in the station's announcement. "And that personality and authenticity is why the audience connected with her."
In 2019, Hughes was diagnosed with breast cancer, which she announced during a Sunday broadcast and then continued to share her journey with co-workers, viewers and social media followers. According to the station, Hughes has become "passionate about advocating for and supporting breast cancer patients, their families and survivors."
She is involved in many community organizations throughout the Tri-State and has participated in the American Cancer Society's Making Strides for Breast Cancer initiative.
In a statement, Hughes said she will continue the work she's done regarding "women’s health, breast cancer awareness, education and cancer advocacy," and looks forward to spending more time with her family upon leaving the station.
“I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to serve the Greater Cincinnati and Tri-State community for over the past 10 plus years through my weather forecasting, storytelling and community involvement,” Hughes said in a statement. “My co-workers and Cincinnati viewers have become family, and I’ll cherish the overwhelming love and support they’ve shown me from my first day on the air back in 2011 through my recent health challenges and breast cancer journey."
