Kentucky Wildcats guard CJ Fredrick, an Iowa transfer and former Covington Catholic High School standout, is expected to miss the 2021-22 college basketball season after undergoing surgery this week to repair a hamstring injury, the team announced Saturday via Twitter.
Fredrick announced in May he would continue his career for the Wildcats.
Fredrick won the 3-point shootout at Big Blue Madness and had hoped to return from a leg injury for Kentucky's game earlier this week against Duke before he suffered the hamstring injury.
Fredrick received interest from the Cincinnati Bearcats, Xavier Musketeers, and several other schools - per reports - before committing to UK.
Fredrick, a guard who played for the Hawkeyes for the past two seasons, announced in April that he entered the NCAA transfer portal.
As a sophomore, Fredrick averaged 7.5 points in 24.7 minutes per game and shot 47.4 percent from 3-point range in 27 games this past season. A lower-leg injury limited his availability in February.
As a redshirt freshman for the Hawkeyes during the 2019-20 season, he averaged 10.2 points per game and shot 46.1 percent from 3-point range in 25 games.
Fredrick scored 21 in the Hawkeyes' win against UC in Dec. 2019.
Fredrick's teammate at Iowa, Jack Nunge, transferred to Xavier and scored 11 points with six rebounds off the bench in the Musketeers' 73-59 win against Kent State on Friday night.
Fredrick led CovCath to the 2018 KHSAA Sweet 16 state championship, and was a Mr. Basketball finalist.
