The Georgia Bulldogs defeated the Cincinnati Bearcats in heartbreaking fashion in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl on the first day of this year.
On Tuesday night after the first 2021 College Football Playoff rankings were revealed, ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit encouraged UC fans during the network's broadcast of the rankings release to root for UGA for the rest of this season.
"(The Bearcats) are gonna have to have some help," Herbstreit said. "We've been here before, where people talk about a ceiling and how it's unfair. The reality is this: If you're a Cincinnati fan, you are pulling for the Georgia Bulldogs to win the rest of their games, including the SEC Championship. That would eliminate obviously Alabama. After that, you're looking at the Big Ten - you have Ohio State, you have Michigan, you have Michigan State. That potentially works itself out with one of those surviving as the Big Ten champion. Don't forget this, Cincinnati fans: It's not just what's in front of you, it's what's behind you. If Oklahoma keeps winning - and they've got some behemoth games on their schedule coming up with Baylor, Iowa State and "Bedlam" - on the road in Stillwater against Oklahoma State. And a Big 12 Championship. You have to worry about what's behind you (in the rankings), not just what's in front of you. So clearly, the Bearcats are gonna need some help."
Reactions to UC's No. 6 CFP ranking
Analyst Greg McElroy added that UC fans also have to root for Notre Dame to finish strong: "I think Cincinnati is well-positioned, but they need to be rooting for other outcomes. ... Notre Dame (finishing 11-1 would be) massive for the Cincinnati Bearcats. They need to be pulling hard for the Fighting Irish every single week."
