New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh confirmed Wednesday that backup quarterback Mike White will start Sunday's Week 8 matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals.
"Same expectations (for White) every starting quarterback would have," Saleh said Wednesday. "Take care of the football, move the football, move the chains, score when you have the chance to score. Just really command the offense the way he has since OTAs and training camp. Thought he did a really nice job when he stepped in there on Sunday. ... He can move the ball. He can do well. Don't make it bigger than it needs to be."
White, 26, finished Sunday's 54-13 loss to the New England Patriots 20-of-32 with 202 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in relief of Wilson, who was injured during the second quarter. It was White's National Football League regular-season debut.
The Jets confirmed Monday that rookie quarterback Zach Wilson is expected to miss 2-4 weeks after an MRI on his right knee revealed a PCL sprain.
White is getting reps with the first-team offense after running the scout team since training camp. He's in his third season with the Jets.
White spent one season with the Dallas Cowboys, which drafted him in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He played two seasons collegiately at South Florida and two seasons at Western Kentucky.
The Jets are expected to elevate Josh Johnson - who played in two for the Bengals in 2013 - from the practice squad to the active roster to serve as White's backup.
NFL Network's Mike Garofolo reported Monday evening via Twitter that the Jets acquired veteran quarterback Joe Flacco from the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a conditional draft pick:
Flacco signed a one-year deal with the Jets in May 2020 and played in five games for them last season. He hasn't appeared in a game for the Eagles, which signed him to a one-year deal in March.
