Asked by the defense, nearly half of the prospective jurors in the first group indicated they had a "negative feeling" toward Travis or Gregory McMichael.
"He shot a man who had been running through his neighborhood who didn’t appear to have done anything wrong," one woman, a retired accountant and auditor, said of Travis McMichael. "What would I call that? I guess I would call it murder."
When asked if they considered the Confederate flag to be a "racist symbol," three jurors raised their hand.
"If somebody’s flying a Confederate flag, I don’t think it means they believe in state’s rights," the woman said. "I think it means they have a racist view."
The judge is weighing whether to allow prosecutors to show the trial jury images of a vanity plate showing Georgia’s former state flag, which prominently included the Confederate battle emblem, that was on the front of the truck the McMichaels used to chase Arbery.
Legal experts have said that although race likely won't be a key strategy for the prosecution, they expect it to be prominent in the trial and have raised concerns the defense will try to exclude potential jurors based on race. Brunswick, which has just over 16,000 residents, is predominantly Black but sits in the overwhelmingly white Glynn County.
