Individuals near Wright-Patterson Air Force Base may see smoke, fire and a significant presence of emergency personnel Thursday.
No need to worry.
Officials with the base said it will be part of an emergency-management exercise, and those on and around the base should not call 911.
The drill is scheduled to simulate an accident with mass casualties, officials said.
"It's important for everyone to participate in the exercise as an incident like this has the potential to happen at any time," said Miguel Diaz, 88th Air Base Wing exercise planner. "Being better prepared as a result of what we learn from an exercise can potentially save lives should one ever take place."
Smoke and fire effects could be employed at the simulated accident location, and emergency-response vehicles will be moving around the base.
Some roadways may be temporarily blocked, and gate traffic could be backed up or rerouted to other entry-control points if a gate is closed.
As part of the training exercise, surrounding communities may hear the alert sirens or the "Giant Voice" loudspeaker activation.
The 88th Air Base Wing's inspection team will evaluate participants' responses throughout the base.
Last month, the base was on lockdown for several hours following reports of gunshots heard at the campus. Eventually, the all-clear, and officials said a shooter wasn't found.
