Cincinnati Reds rookie pitcher Hunter Greene threw 7 1/3 no-hit innings during Sunday's series finale against the Pirates in Pittsburgh before he was replaced - having thrown 118 pitches - by relief pitcher Art Warren.
In his seventh big-league start, Greene struck out nine batters while walking five. He threw 69 of his 118 pitches for strikes. He left when the game was still a scoreless tie, responsible for two Pirates baserunners.
"Really surprised the Reds don't have anybody up right now in their bullpen," Bally Sports Ohio analyst Jeff Brantley said during the broadcast, as Greene started the bottom of the 8th.
"I thought somebody should've been up as he took the mound before the first hitter stepped to the plate," Brantley added as Greene faced his final batter with one on and one out.
Warren replaced Greene after he walked two Pirates with one out in the 8th. The Pirates took a 1-0 lead on a fielder's choice against Warren - with the run charged to Greene - but remained hitless through eight innings. Pittsburgh's 1-0 lead held up in the top of the 9th, giving the Reds a loss despite the fact that neither Greene nor Warren allowed a hit.
It's the sixth time in Major League Baseball's Modern Era (since 1900) that a team has not allowed a hit in a loss, and first since 2008.
"Hopefully I'm gonna have a lot more opportunities for (no-hitters)," Greene told reporters afterward. "So I'm just looking forward to that."
