When I got the opportunity to start a newsletter with The Enquirer/Cincinnati.com, I probably spent too much time thinking about the name.
I wanted something different and easy to remember, but my first 50 ideas were either uninspiring or corny. At first, I kept trying to use my last name, Goldsmith, in the title. I kicked around some pretty bad ideas and some pretty bad puns before I asked for help.
I brought up the dilemma in my family group text. My dad said I should try to use my first name. My sister proposed the name “Charlie’s Chalk Talk.” It was a good idea, but it seemed a little too formal. My brother sent the next text, and his idea was the winner.
Welcome to “Charlie’s Chalkboard.”
I’m Charlie Goldsmith, a Cincinnati guy who’s invested in why the Reds and Bengals are making the moves they’re making. I hope we can have the same conversations about sports here that you’re having at the gym, in the break room or at the lunch table.
We went with the name Charlie’s Chalkboard because this is the space where I’ll be going through my notebook, elaborating on the topics that have been on my mind and sharing insight that could have been left on the cutting room floor.
Every Tuesday via email, I’ll continue the conversations that we’re all having about the Reds and the Bengals. I’ll give you some exclusive insight from the locker room, some trends I’m seeing on the field and more of my perspective on where the Reds and Bengals are going.
I’m virtually at every practice and game the two teams have, and there’s a lot more to talk about that doesn’t make it into a traditional story. After rewatching game film, if I’m looking at the next step for Joe Burrow, I’ll go deeper into those observations as well as Burrow’s perspective. If I want to know how the Reds are navigating short and long-term success, this is a great space to do that.
Whether it’s a new schematic trend, a meaningful detail on one of the players or changes in the depth chart, this is the place where I’ll be sharing what I’m seeing and hearing.
On our Cincinnati.com platforms and in the newspaper, I have a great opportunity to tell stories. In this space, I have a great opportunity to hold a conversation about some of the most important topics in Cincinnati sports.
Everything’s on the table. Topics like ownership, fan engagement and the relationship between a city and its pro sports franchises have been at the forefront recently, and I’ll be adding to that conversation.
