1 in serious condition after house explosion in Madeira


One man is in serious condition after a house explosion in Madeira early Wednesday morning.Madeira Indian Hills Joint Fire District Chief Steve Oughterson tells WLWT that the initial 911 call came in for a natural gas leak and, as officials were en route to the scene, the call changed to a structure fire.Authorities say the back side is completely blown out and nothing is supporting the roof or the basement.Fire crews say they had to tunnel their way to a man, the resident of the home, to rescue him. He has been taken to U.C. Medical Center.Chief Oughterson says the man was conscious and talking with rescue crews.Officials say they believe it is a natural gas explosion, but a cause is still under investigation.No other homes suffered damage. Duke Energy is on the scene and has ensured gas is off at the home and at neighboring homes to ensure no other leaks in the area.This is a developing story.
