Ohio zoo mourns loss of 13-year-old Asian elephant, Beco

The Columbus Zoo is mourning the loss of one of its Asian elephants.The zoo said their 13-year-old Asian elephant, Beco, died around 11 a.m. Saturday.Beco died from Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus (EEHV).The zoo said EEHV is a life-threatening virus that's affecting elephants living in the wild and in sanctuaries and zoos worldwide. "Despite the heroic efforts of his devoted Animal Care and Animal Health teams and the expertise of other zoo professionals and scientists across the country, Beco was overcome by the virus," the zoo said in a Facebook post.Beco was surrounded by his care team when he died.To read more about the virus, click here.
