An Indiana man has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for raping and robbing a Miami University student 16 years ago. Lloyd Ailes, 59, was indicted in December on multiple felonies in Butler County, including two counts of rape, two counts of aggravated burglary and two counts of aggravated robbery. He pleaded guilty to charges in May. WLWT covered the story in 2006 when it broke. Investigators had said a 21-year-old was robbed at gunpoint by a masked man, tied up and raped inside her off-campus house on North Campus Avenue.One of the victim's housemates called 911."Someone just got in our house. My housemate just got raped. Please come. He has a gun and told her he'd kill her," the caller said.The case went cold. Little did detectives know then that DNA collected at the scene would lead them to an arrest almost 16 years later."This defendant was determined to be genetically the donor of the sperm that was found in the body of the young lady from Miami University," Butler County Prosecutor Mike Gmoser said.With help of the DA technology company Parabon, Gmoser said detectives were able to figure out who the attacker's father was."We were ultimately able, through thousands of hours of work and the analysis of many genetic details, we able to determine, first, who the father of this defendant was, Gmoser said.Gmoser said investigators hit a roadblock when Ailes' biological father didn't know he had the son."That's what made it so complicated, because we were able to find the father, but then almost reached a dead end in determining who the mother was," Gmoser said.Detectives eventually tracked her down."The mother of this defendant was not aware that the father was somebody other than her husband," Gmoser said.Gmoser said further analysis ultimately led them to Ailes."In addition to the DNA, because his mask came off very briefly, the image that was imprinted in the mind of the young lady in Oxford gave her the ability to give an artist rendition," Gmoser said. "The image the victim created in Ohio was virtually the same as the face of this defendant at the time of the assault." Ailes is also a suspect in a rape that occurred in Fayette County Indiana, Gmoser said. Ailes has not been charged in that case.
