Uvalde surveillance video showing school shooting criticized by mayor

  • A 77-minute surveillance video from Robb Elementary was released Tuesday exclusively by the Austin American-Statesman, part of the USA TODAY Network, and KVUE.
  • The video showed police officers standing around for more than an hour, waiting to confront the shooter.
  • A heated city council meeting Tuesday followed, where the mayor blasted the news organizations for releasing the video.
  • Some residents, however, were frustrated with the lack of transparency from the city and police.

UVALDE, Texas — A tense exchange during the Uvalde, Texas, city council meeting Tuesday night followed the release of an exclusive video from the Austin American-Statesman, part of the USA TODAY Network, that showed police officers’ delayed response to the Robb Elementary shooting.

The mayor, Don McLaughlin, blasted the Statesman and TV station KVUE for releasing the video Tuesday afternoon before family members could see it. While McLaughlin said the video "needs to be released," he called the decision to publish "chicken" and "cheap." Council Member Ernest “Chip” King then said, “the mayor says chicken, it was chickens---.”
