The Cincinnati Bengals' stadium soon could have new signs to go with its new name. The displays will include huge floodlit signs atop the stadium's two canopies, visible to cameras on drones or blimps televising games at the venue.
The Cincinnati city planning commission voted Friday to approve plans for new signage standards at Paycor Stadium.
Bengals representatives brought the petition for zoning code relief before the city planning commission, arguing that relief was needed in order to promote the new name of Paycor ahead of the new football season this fall. The Bengals and the architects, Gensler Sports and Cincinnati-based Elevar Design Group, of the proposed redesign estimated that 70,000 square feet of new signage are needed.
The name change still has to be approved by Hamilton County commissioners, since the county owns the stadium. The sign plans also have to be approved by Cincinnati City Council and the Hamilton County Regional Planning Commission.
In addition to changing the signs on the outside of the stadium's two scoreboards, two large mesh signs also will be draped on the east and west facades of the stadiums, according to the plan presented to city planners. The plan includes a total of 12 signs.
The planning commission voted to approve the proposal on the conditions that the signage be sized appropriately, illuminated according to industry standards, and not include any moving images or videos.
According to the Cincinnati Municipal Code, the stadium at 1 Paul Brown Stadium Way is part of the Downtown Development Zoning District, which enforces special rules for signage on everything from street-front restaurants and retail to skyscrapers.
