High school football NKY Round-Up: Week 5


The longest winning streak in the state of Kentucky was snapped and some Bluebirds put up some big numbers in victory.NO. 18 COVINGTON CATHOLIC 31, NO. 21 BEECHWOOD 14Covington Catholic snapped Beechwood’s 27 game winning streak with a convincing 31-14 victory.Defense was the key for the Colonels as they held Beechwood without an offensive touchdown until late in the third quarter.Covington Catholic went up early 7-0. Beechwood would respond when Antonio Robinson tied things on an 85-yard kickoff return early in the second quarter and the score was 7-7.Evan Pitzer would lead a Colonel drive and punch one in himself from about three yards out and Covington Catholic retook the lead at 14-7. Pitzer would strike again when he found Willie Rodriguez from 11 yards out for another touchdown and a 21-7 lead at the half.Pitzer was back to work in the third. He connected with Braylon Miller for a score with 3:11 to play in the third. The Colonel defense continually got the Beechwood offense off of the field and put their offense in position to make the big play.Andrew Weitzel would tack on a 33-yard field goal to present the final score in the Colonels terrific win.Pitzer was 11-14 for 156 yards and two touchdowns to lead the offense. He found Willie Rodriguez five times for 91 yards and a score. Owen Leen rushed 37 times for 150 yards and a touchdown to pace the ground attack for the Colonels.Beechwood’s Cash Harney threw for 125 yards and a touchdown in a losing effort.NEWPORT CENTRAL CATHOLIC 49, HOLY CROSS 21Newport Central Catholic racked up 520 yards of total offense as they bludgeoned Holy Cross 49-21. That included a whopping 351 yards on the ground.Demetrick Welch Jr.(16 carries, 162 yds, 1 TD) Luke Runyon (8 carries, 122 yds, 3 TD), and Kaleb Cole (4 carries, 51yards, 2 TD) paced the ground game for the Thoroughbreds. NCC Quarterback Kolton Smith was up to his usual solid performance as he was 8-18 for 169 yards and a score through the air.Holy Cross was led by quarterback Donovan Ambrocio who put up some big numbers. Covington Catholic snapped Beechwood’s 27 game winning streak with a convincing 31-14 victory.

Defense was the key for the Colonels as they held Beechwood without an offensive touchdown until late in the third quarter.

Covington Catholic went up early 7-0. Beechwood would respond when Antonio Robinson tied things on an 85-yard kickoff return early in the second quarter and the score was 7-7.

Evan Pitzer would lead a Colonel drive and punch one in himself from about three yards out and Covington Catholic retook the lead at 14-7. Pitzer would strike again when he found Willie Rodriguez from 11 yards out for another touchdown and a 21-7 lead at the half.

NEWPORT CENTRAL CATHOLIC 49, HOLY CROSS 21

Newport Central Catholic racked up 520 yards of total offense as they bludgeoned Holy Cross 49-21. That included a whopping 351 yards on the ground.

Demetrick Welch Jr.(16 carries, 162 yds, 1 TD) Luke Runyon (8 carries, 122 yds, 3 TD), and Kaleb Cole (4 carries, 51yards, 2 TD) paced the ground game for the Thoroughbreds.

NCC Quarterback Kolton Smith was up to his usual solid performance as he was 8-18 for 169 yards and a score through the air.

Holy Cross was led by quarterback Donovan Ambrocio who put up some big numbers. Ambrocio was 16-31 for 301 yards and a touchdown.Landyn Phillips (164) and Javier Ward (110) both went over 100 yards receiving in the losing effort.
