Couple dead in murder-suicide in Adams County


Officials are investigating an apparent murder-suicide in Adams County Wednesday.According to officials, a 911 call came into the Adam County Communication Center around 2:14p.m. of an individual firing several shots at the Southern Ohio Lumber Company. According to a source, the man allegedly shot a woman inside the business then fled."It's my understanding that they were going through a divorce and that there have been some information that just came to light today, which may have been the reason for him doing what he did," investigator for the Adam County's Prosecutor's Office and Investigator for the Adam County Coroner's office, Kenny Dick said.Investigators said the couple worked at the lumber facility but were on different schedules today."They both work here. He was not supposed to be here. So even though they both work here it was his week off, so he was not to be here today," Dick said. "When law enforcement arrived at the scene, they discovered the body of a white female was deceased inside one of the buildings." About 15 minutes after officers arrived on scene, police tracked down the man on the road and that's when the man shot himself inside his car, officials said. "Law enforcement made a traffic stop at the intersection State Route 32 and 41," Dick said. "As officers exited their vehicles, the person inside suffered from a self-inflicted gunshot wound before officers could get to him."The couple has been identified as 32-year-old Jason Madden and 33-year-old Rachel Madden, a source at the sheriff's office confirmed.A source also confirmed Rachel had filed a protection order against Jason on Aug. 16, 2022 and it was in place at the time of the shooting. The sheriff also stated Jason also received a notice on Wednesday that he could no longer work at the company. Police confirmed the couple had a 12-year-old son.
