Frontier fight diverted to Atlanta after passenger seen with boxcutter

A Frontier Airlines flight bound for Tampa was diverted to Atlanta late Friday after a passenger in the cabin was seen with a box cutter.

The Frontier flight, which originated from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, was diverted to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport about 9:30 p.m. ET after there was a disturbance involving a disruptive passenger who was in possession of a box cutter, officials said.

"The cockpit was secure and passengers were deplaned" in Atlanta, Transportation Security Administration spokesperson Patricia Mancha said in an email to USA TODAY.

The FBI and Atlanta Police Department responded and took the passenger, who has not been named, into custody, she said. A second box cutter was found in the passenger's carry-on luggage, Mancha said.

Passengers were provided overnight hotel accommodations in Atlanta and were to be transported to Tampa Saturday morning, Frontier Airlines spokesperson Jennifer de la Cruz said.

No injuries were reported, she said.

The TSA started an internal review of the incident, checking closed circuit TV footage and other procedures, Mancha said. The U.S. attorney's office is the lead agency investigating the Frontier flight, she said.
