Reds acquire infielder Kevin Newman from Pirates


The Cincinnati Reds made their second trade of the night on Friday, acquiring Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Kevin Newman.Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic was first to report the deal on Twitter.Earlier Friday night, the Reds agreed to send infielder Kyle Farmer to the Minnesota Twins in exchange for right-handed pitcher Casey Legumina.Newman spent five seasons with the Pirates, hitting for a .660 OPS and 20 home runs during his tenure. The 29-year-old hit .274 in 78 games with Pittsburgh last season, though his two home runs and .372 slugging percentage kept his OPS for the season under .700.Newman, out of the University of Arizona, has played mostly shortstop and second base during his Major League career, with several games at third base and left field as well.Headed to Pittsburgh is right handed reliever Dauri Moreta, who made 35 appearances with the Reds this past season, going 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA. In 28 appearances with Triple-A Louisville, he went 3-4 with a 3.95 ERA.The Dominican native signed with the Reds as an international free agent in March of 2015.The Reds recently added a pair of shortstops to their 40-man roster this week in Elly De La Cruz and Noelvi Marte. The 20-year-old De La Cruz is ranked as the Reds' number one overall prospect according to MLB Pipeline, while Marte is the second overall prospect on the list. The Reds acquired the 21-year-old Marte as part of the Luis Castillo trade in July.Shortstop Jose Barrero is also on the 40-man roster. Barrero started 48 games for the Reds in 2022, hitting .152 with a .401 OPS.
