34-year-old man shot, killed in Winton Hills

CINCINNATI — A 34-year-old man was killed in shooting in Winton Hills Sunday morning, Cincinnati police said.

Just after 5:30 a.m., police responded to reports of a gunshot victim at Strand Lane and Bettman Drive.

The victim was taken to UC Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Shortly afterwards, CPD informed a WCPO reporter on scene that the victim had died from his injuries.

According to police, at least 12 shots were fired, as 12 shell casings had been found during their investigation.

No suspect information is available at this time.

Mitch Morris with the Cincinnati Works Phoenix program went to the scene as police investigated Sunday morning. He holds events regularly in the area to curb gun violence.

"We want to talk to you about it before you get into this type of stuff," Morris said. "So if you beefing, going through some things, let's talk about it, save you from going down that wrong road."

Morris said communication is key to getting people to put guns down.

"Everybody should have a safe place to live," he said.

Another piece of the puzzle is getting people with information about shootings to come forward.

"The most important one that keeps people from it is fear of retaliation," said Gene Ferrara, President of Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Crime Stoppers.

The organization collects anonymous tips to solve crimes. In 2022, Crime Stoppers solved 13 homicides with anonymous tips. The organization also provided about $90,000 in rewards for tips last year.

"Many of these are the same shooters and even when it's not the same shooter, many of them are the same gun," Ferrara said. "It doesn't stop on its own. If we don't have people coming forward, it's just going to continue."
