Jackson State University head coach Deion Sanders has been preparing to leave the Tigers to accept a position as head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, according to a report late Friday from ESPN's Pete Thamel.
Thamel added that "Sanders and his associates have spent the week making inquiries to both potential members of his on-field staff and support staff at Colorado, pitching them to join him in Boulder."
The Enquirer's Keith Jenkins reported earlier this week that Sanders was among top candidates to replace Luke Fickell as head coach of the Cincinnati Bearcats after Fickell left for Wisconsin.
Sanders, a Pro Football Hall of Famer played parts of four seasons for the Cincinnati Reds, had said he received an offer to become Colorado's next head coach but added that "they're not the only ones."
Colorado fired head coach Karl Dorrell after he went 8-15 in three seasons in Boulder.
Sanders became Jackson State's head coach in Sept. 2020.
He hit hit .260 with 94 stolen bases for the Reds in 1994, 1995, 1997 and 2001.
Sanders said during the week before the Bengals selected Joe Burrow first overall in the 2020 NFL Draft that Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa would be Sanders' choice if he held the top pick.
