Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters is a finalist for the open seat on Ohio's Supreme Court, sources confirmed to WLWT.The seat opened up when Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Maureen O'Conner made the decision to step down because of the age limit.Sharon Kennedy was elected in November to take her seat as chief justice.Deters has never been a magistrate or judge.Since starting his legal career in 1982, Deters has served as an assistant prosecuting attorney, the clerk of courts for Hamilton County and Ohio's 44th treasurer of state before returning to Hamilton County, where he is now the county's longest-serving prosecuting attorney.According to his website, Deters' most notable accomplishments include fighting to pass the "Daly Bill" which gives rights to unborn children, affording them legal protection from assault and homicide under Ohio's Criminal Code.Other achievements listed include helping to streamline litigation in death penalty cases and helping to create Ohio's statewide DNA database.Deters most recently spearheaded getting Ohio Issue 1 on the ballot, which allows judges to consider public safety when setting bail determinations. The issue passed by more than 77 percent. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine will announce his pick to fill the open seat by the end of the year."Our office has not commented on any potential appointment. No decision has been made at this time," a spokesperson doe DeWine's office said Friday. If he selects a Republican, there will be four Republicans and three Democrats on the Ohio Supreme Court.
