Former Covington Catholic standout Michael Mayer has officially signed with the Las Vegas Raiders, the team announced on Wednesday.Mayer was drafted by the Raiders with the 35th overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft in April.As a senior in 2019, Mayer caught 49 balls for 970 yards and 15 touchdowns while also scoring two rushing touchdowns.He also got it done on defense for the Colonels, totaling 102.5 tackles, 1.5 sacks and four interceptions, including a pick returned for a touchdown.His efforts helped lead CovCath to the Kentucky 5A state championship and he was named the game's MVP. He earned 2019 Mr. Football honors from the Kentucky Football Coaches Association, was named the 5A District Player of the Year and the Gatorade Football Player of the Year.A three-year starter at Notre Dame, Mayer totaled 180 receptions for 2,099 yards and 18 touchdowns for the Irish, etching his name in the Notre Dame record books in the process.In just three seasons, he ranks third all-time in receptions, one behind T.J. Jones' 181, and is tied for 10th in receiving touchdowns, along with Maurice Stovall.Last year, Mayer logged 67 receptions for 809 yards and nine touchdowns, all team-best receiving statistics. His nine touchdowns were also a career-high. Mayer will look to be the heir apparent to Darren Waller, who caught 298 balls for 3,469 yards and 17 touchdowns in five years with the Raiders. He was traded to the New York Giants this past offseason.Since 2020, Waller led all Raiders receivers in receiving yards and targets.He also walks in with a new quarterback under center for the Silver and Black, with their acquisition of Jimmy Garoppolo to replace Derek Carr.
