Several reports have new University of Cincinnati head football coach Scott Satterfield on the verge of adding a general manager for player personnel. Both John Brice of FootballScoop.com and On3.com's Matt Zenitz are reporting the Bearcats will add Ohio State's Zach Grant to the position.
Grant is not yet 30 and was named Football Scoop's Player Personnel Director of the Year for his work in 2021 with Western Kentucky. At Ohio State for just one season, he's been under Associate Athletic Director/General Manager of Personnel Mark Pantoni with the Buckeyes who just finished with another top-five recruiting class.
The Buckeyes play No. 1 Georgia on New Year's Eve in the Chic-Fil-A Peach Bowl. Grant was part of the crew that recruited locals Jermaine Mathews Jr. of Winton Woods and Malik Hartford of Lakota West, who signed with Ohio State Wednesday.
He became personnel director at Western Kentucky in 2017 at age 23 and helped the Hilltoppers acquire such talent as defensive end DeAngelo Malone, a third-round pick of the Falcons and quarterback Bailey Zappe, a fourth-round pick of New England. Zappe in 2021 broke NCAA records for passing yards and touchdowns with 5,545 and 56, respectively.
He worked under Tyson Helton at WKU who just beat South Alabama 44-23 in the New Orleans Bowl Dec. 21. Grant is a 2016 Notre Dame grad and was a student recruiting specialist for the Irish for two years under former UC coach Brian Kelly.
Ed Terwilliger is Ohio State's Director of High School Services, while he didn't know the status of Grant's future, he vouched for his work ethic.
"Zach's a tireless worker," Terwilliger said. "He dots his i's and crosses his t's. He's great at his evaluation.."
The University of Cincinnati athletic department doesn't anticipate any official hiring news until after Jan. 1.
The Enquirer will add to this story as information becomes available.
