A public Mass will be held next month honoring the life of local chef Jean-Robert de Cavel.

De Cavel died on Friday at age 61 after a battle with cancer. He is credited for leading a resurgence in fine dining in Cincinnati.

A memorial Mass will be held at Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter in Chains on Jan. 16 at 9:30 a.m. Those who attend are asked to wear de Cavel's favorite color, blue.

De Cavel came to Cincinnati in 1993 when he was 32 to work at The Maisonette, the city's only Mobil 5-star-rated restaurant. He since opened several fine dining restaurants, including Table, Pigalls Le Bar a Boeuf and French Crust Café and Bistro.

De Cavel had battled leiomyosarcoma, a rare cancer that grows in the smooth muscles, since 2018, but never let cancer stop him from his work

De Cavel was born in Roubaix, France on September 12, 1961. He studied at Le Feguide culinary school in Lille, France and was chef de cuisine at La Regence and La Gauloise in New York before coming to Cincinnati in 1993.
