LEADING THE WAY AS FAR AS WHEN AND WHY? THAT’S NOT MY THAT’S NOT MY DEPARTMENT. YOU KNOW, WHEN HE DOES GET THAT CALL, YOU KNOW, HE’S CHECKING MOST OF THE BOXES AND HE’S READY TO GO OUT THERE AND BE A CONTRIBUTOR FROM DAY ONE. WELL, WITH JUST 34 TRIPLE-A GAMES UNDER HIS BELT, ELLIE DE LA CRUZ IS ALREADY A LOUISVILLE LEGEND. SO WE HAVE THE MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION POTENTIALLY SOON TO BE THE MULTIMILLION DOLLAR QUESTION. WHY HAVEN’T THE REDS CALLED HIM UP JUST YET? WELL, SPORTS REPORTER OLIVIA RAY SPENT A DAY DOWN ON THE FARM SEARCHING FOR SOME OF THOSE ANSWERS. OLIVIA. I DON’T KNOW IF I FOUND THEM, BUT I DID FIND A LOT OF GREAT STORIES. THE TALL TALES OF ELLIE DE LA CRUZ. NOW THE ROAD TO THE SHOW. IT RUNS THROUGH LOUISVILLE TONIGHT. ELLIE DE LA CRUZ, HE’S UP NEXT. THE ONLY QUESTION THAT REMAINS IS WHEN, BEFORE HE ARRIVES, THE STORIES ABOUT DE LA CRUZ DOWN FROM THE TRIPLE A SCENE. THEY SEEM TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE. THEY AREN’T, THOUGH. IT’S NONFICTION. IN A NEW RELEASE AND WRITTEN BY THOSE WHO ARE CURRENTLY SHARING THE DUGOUT WITH DE LA CRUZ. SHE SAYS THE SIX FOOT FIVE 200 POUNDS SWITCH HITTING SHORTSTOP HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS A UNICORN, AN IN BASEBALL PANTS. THOSE WHO TAKE THE FIELD WITH ELLIE DE LA CRUZ HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS. FIVE TOOL TALENT VIDEO GAME. LIKE SOMETIMES THERE’S 21 YEAR OLD LIKE THAT’S NOT NORMAL. SOME OF THEM JUST SOUND LIKE A BOMB GOING OFF. COMES UP HIS NEXT AT BAT. THE LEFT HANDED AND HIT A HOMER AND THEN IT’S AN X ABOUT HIS BAT AND RIGHT. AND IT HIT A HOMER FOR ANOTHER 30 FEET. AND YOU’RE LIKE, THAT’S WHAT I DO ON THE VIDEO GAME. THIS DUDE DID IT IN REAL LIFE. YOU HIT ONE HERE, I THINK, A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO, LIKE 118 DOWN THE LINE THAT ALMOST KNOCKED THAT WALL DOWN 180 MILES PER HOUR. EXIT VELOCITY, THAT’S A REAL STAT AND IT ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT END THERE. THERE’S A COUPLE OF TIMES HE’S BEEN CLOCKED THROWING THE BALL, 99 MILES AN HOUR ACROSS THE THE DIAMOND FLYING INFIELD LIKE THIS DUDE. HE’S GOT ALL THE CHEAT TOOLS, YOU KNOW, ON DEFENSE. HE’S THROWING HARDER THAN THOSE ON THE MOUND. WHEN I ASKED HIM HOW HE WOULD DESCRIBE HIS ARM, DE LA CRUZ COMPARED HIS GAME TO O’NEIL. CRUZ, THE YOUNG STAR FROM THE PIRATE S I SEE THEM. THEY SAY THERE ARE PEOPLE ASKING ABOUT THEIR BROTHERS NOT RELATED BY BLOOD. BUT THE CRUZ’S BOTH HAVE MAD FAST FOOT SPEED. DE LA CRUZ WAS CLOCKED A FLYING AT 31.9 FEET PER SECOND. NOBODY RUNS FASTER THAN I WAS ON SECOND, BUT I’M BOTH THROUGH THE THIRD BASEMAN’S LEGS AND HE WAS CAUGHT ME FROM FIRST. LIKE IN HERE. IT’S WHILE YOU EVER SEE LIKE IT LIKE ANIMAL PLANET WHEN LIKE THE CHEETAH JUST GETS UP AND CHASES IT. GAZELLE DOESN’T LIKE ME. THAT’S COOL, TOO. LIKE YOU DO THAT, TOO. YOU REALIZE HE’S ONLY 21. AND YOU KNOW, HOPEFULLY HE’S DOING IT TILL HE’S 41 AGAIN. LEDGE MEADERY STATUS ALREADY IN LOUISVILLE. PEOPLE ARE THROWING OUT THE WORLD. ALL STAR AND HE HASN’T EVEN GOT CALLED UP TO THE REDS JUST YET. NOW, OF COURSE, THE OTHER QUESTION REMAINS IS WHERE WOULD HE SLOT IN FOR ADDED CINCINNATI UP IN THE MLB? I SPOKE TO THE REDS INTERNATIONAL SCOUT. HE TOLD ME THAT HE’S SEEN ELLIE DE LA CRUZ PLAY EVERY POSITION IN THE INFIELD WHEN THEY COME UP IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, THEY GO AHEAD AND HAVE THOSE PLAYERS ROTATE THROUGH. SO WHO’S TO SAY THEY COULDN’T STICK HIM ON THE HOT CORNER? THEY’
