Winter months give best viewing chances for bald eagles in Ohio

Ohio residents will have the best opportunity to spot a bald eagle this winter season, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife.ODNR said bald eagles in Ohio start courtship in January, and that, combined with an absence of vegetation, makes this one of the best times to view them.Officials said the state's bald eagle population has increased significantly over the past few years. In 2022, ODNR estimates there were 824 bald eagle nests statewide.The best areas to spot a bald eagle are near rivers, wetlands, and frozen lakes or occasionally sitting in open fields. “The recent success of Ohio’s bald eagles is owed in a big way to improvements in the state’s water quality and habitat availability,” Division of Wildlife Chief Kendra Wecker said in a statement. “Expanding wildlife areas and Governor DeWine’s H2Ohio program to restore wetlands provides eagles with additional space to nest and raise their young. The bald eagle’s recovery is an example of how wildlife and habitats benefit when the state, conservation partners, and individuals work together.”ODNR said a good pair of binoculars or even a spotting scope is recommended to spot birds at long distances. Bald eagles are protected under both state law and the federal Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, making it illegal to disturb bald eagles. That means that when viewing the birds, remember to respect their space and stay at least 100 yards away.
