National Save the Eagles Day: There's now over 700 eagle nests in Ohio
Monday marked National Save the Eagles Day in the United States to raise awareness about eagles and highlight the recent conservation efforts so that the species does not go extinct.According to officials with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Ohio's eagle population is thriving and growing. ODNR said there were four eagle breeding pairs in Ohio in 1979 and in 2020, there were over 700 eagle nests."Through the diligent efforts of wildlife biologists and a concerned public, the bald eagle population is no longer on the federal endangered species list," ODNR wrote on Facebook Monday.Although its endangered status has been delisted, officials said the eagle will be federally monitored for five years.Management by the division remains minimal, with primary duties including working with rehabilitators that help injured birds recover, and helping to enforce protective state and federal laws, such as the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.
