Xavier University's athletic department announced Monday it has mutually agreed to part ways with women's basketball head coach Melanie Moore after four seasons.
“We appreciate Melanie and her staff for their work the last four years. Melanie led the program in a first-class manner, navigated her team through COVID and always focused on what was best for the young women in our women’s basketball program,” Xavier vice president and director of athletics Greg Christopher said in a press release. “We collectively thank Melanie for her efforts and wish her the best moving forward.”
Moore, who was named the eighth coach in Xavier women's basketball history in April of 2019, went 24-81 with the Musketeers. Xavier went winless (0-20) in the Big East Conference this season.
“I want to thank everyone at Xavier, including our former players, for the opportunity to lead this program,” Moore said in the release. “A special thanks to my staff and team for their hard work and commitment.”
A national search for the next coach will begin immediately.
“Basketball is important for Xavier University, and our Women’s Basketball program has a tradition and history of success,” said Christopher. “We expect that our Women’s Basketball team can be competitive within the BIG EAST and play in the postseason.”

Christopher told The Enquirer the search to replace Moore is "wide open and we’ll be looking at a broad spectrum of candidates. We’ve had success in women’s basketball, so it’s important to find the right person to lead our program.
“The women’s basketball search is our top priority, and we’ll be focused on this immediately. There’s no specific timeline, other than you often see interviews take place at or around the women’s Final Four.”
