An accused burglar who evaded Independence police and other police agencies with canine teams and drones for five hours overnight was taken into custody this morning after asking a homeowner for help.
The owner of a home in the 800 block of Stephens Road called 911 and Independence police arrested Jeffery Scherder there about 6:15 a.m., the department said.
Scherder's flight prompted some concern on social media, but Independence police said he was unarmed and went with officers without incident.
Independence police also said they plan to charge Scherder with fleeing, wanton endangerment and criminal mischief.
