Man beat, raped developmentally disabled woman in Forest Park


A Forest Park man who police say raped and beat a woman this weekend stood before a judge Monday. According to testimony from Forest Park Sgt. Jackie Dreyer, German Matthews attacked a woman who is developmentally disabled as she was walking to the bus stop to go to work on Saturday.It happened around 6 a.m. at Winton Road and Smiley Avenue.Dreyer said Matthews threw the victim over a guardrail, down a hill and into a wooded area. Dreyer said the victim was beaten and raped.Police say a passerby called for help, and when officers found Matthews, he was still on top of the woman.She was taken to the hospital with multiple injuries.Dreyer says the victim is suffering from not only the physical wounds from the attack but mental trauma as well. "She's got bites to her breasts. She's got swelling on her brain, bilateral fractured orbitals and a broken nose," Dreyer said during the court hearing. "This was an incident that was nothing more than a brutal attack on a susceptible victim who is developmentally disabled."According to Dreyer, Matthews had sexual assault charges dismissed in Florida.The prosecutor requested a high bond, saying this was a vicious, unprovoked attack on a stranger.The judge set Matthews' bond at $100,000.His next court appearance is on May 9 for a grand jury hearing.

Police say a passerby called for help, and when officers found Matthews, he was still on top of the woman.

She was taken to the hospital with multiple injuries.

Dreyer says the victim is suffering from not only the physical wounds from the attack but mental trauma as well.

"She's got bites to her breasts. She's got swelling on her brain, bilateral fractured orbitals and a broken nose," Dreyer said during the court hearing. "This was an incident that was nothing more than a brutal attack on a susceptible victim who is developmentally disabled."

According to Dreyer, Matthews had sexual assault charges dismissed in Florida.

The judge set Matthews' bond at $100,000.
